Training and previous experience

 Alasdair trained in orthopaedics in Scotland, including a research doctorate, before passing the Intercollegiate specialist examination in trauma and orthopaedics (FRCSEdTr&Orth), affiliated to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.  He received his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in 2002.
Between 2002 and 2003 he completed successive specialist fellowship training in Melbourne:
1.  Trauma, supervised by Prof John Hart, Alfred Hospital (as well as at Sandringham Hospital, The Avenue Hospital)
2.   Joint Replacement, supervised by Mr Neil Bergman, Austin & Repatriation Hospital and Warringal Private
3.  Sports Orthopaedics, supervised by Mr Julian Feller, Austin & Repatriation Hospital and LaTrobe Health Centre.

Alasdair then returned to Scotland and worked as an Orthopaedic Specialist, Senior Lecturer and Director of Orthopaedic Training in Aberdeen over seven years.  He was an ABC Travelling Fellow in 2008.  He has been an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) since 2004 and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the RCSEd and an International Surgical Advisor for the RCSEd for Australia.

Other Roles

Alasdair is Associate Professor at the Deakin University Medical School and Director of Orthopaedic Services at South West Healthcare.  He is a Fellow of the Academy of Surgical Educators and a member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), and has been an instructor in Emergency Management of Severe Trauma (EMST/ATLS) courses.   He is was Director of Training in Warrnambool for the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) for 9 years.

Alasdair has been doing research since his early surgical training, and has published over 60 peer reviewed scientific articles, with further work in progress.  He completed a research doctorate with Honours, MD(Hons), on the relationship between psychological and physical recovery after trauma, in 2001 (a copy of his thesis is included at the bottom of this page).
