"I count myself lucky to be an orthopaedic surgeon. Using the practicalities of engineering and biological science to help patients with joint pain, fractures and joint injuries is incredibly satisfying. Modern science has a lot to offer, but the best orthopaedic treatment considers people as a whole rather than just a sore joint. I moved to Warrnambool with my family in 2010, and I am totally committed to developing and maintaining really good orthopaedic services here in the South West."
High quality, personalised specialist care, delivered locally.
Training and previous experience
Alasdair had an extensive training in orthopaedics in Scotland, including a research doctorate, before doing successive specialist fellowship training in trauma, joint replacement and sports orthopaedics in Melbourne. He worked as an Orthopaedic Specialist, Senior Lecturer and Director of Orthopaedic Training in Aberdeen over seven years. He was an ABC Travelling Fellow in 2008. He has been an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) since 2004 and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the RCSEd.
Alasdair is Associate Professor at the Deakin University Medical School and Director of Orthopaedic Services at South West Healthcare. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Surgical Educators and a member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), and an instructor in Emergency Management of Severe Trauma (EMST/ATLS) courses. He is Director of Training in Warrnambool for the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA), and an ePanel member of the AOA 21 Education and Training redesign project.
Alasdair has been doing research since his early surgical training, and has published over 40 peer reviewed scientific articles, with further work in progress. He completed a research doctorate with Honours, MD(Hons), on the relationship between psychological and physical recovery after trauma, in 2001 (a copy of his thesis is included at the bottom of this page).
