Return to Sport after ACL Surgery - Be patient!

Delaying the return to sport after ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction is crucial for ensuring a successful recovery and reducing the risk of re-injury. The newly implanted graft needs time to mature and integrate properly with the surrounding tissues. During early recovery, the graft undergoes a process called ligamentisation, where it gradually transforms from a tendon graft into a functional ligament. This maturation process is essential for the graft to regain its strength, stability, and resilience, mimicking the natural ACL. Rushing back to sports too soon can disrupt this critical phase of healing, increasing the risk of graft failure or rupture.

Giving the graft adequate time to mature through structured rehabilitation protocols is essential for ensuring the best outcome and reducing the likelihood of re-injury when returning to sport.
